Fired Struthers employee ordered to return jobless benefits

STRUTHERS, Ohio -

A former Struthers Deputy Clerk of Courts convicted of record tampering should repay unemployment benefits according to a finding from Ohio's Auditor of State.

The auditor says 49-year-old Angela Sharpe of Boardman improperly received $823 in unemployment benefits after the city of Struthers fired her from her job as Deputy Clerk of Courts in April 2017.

Sharpe pleaded guilty last year to a first-degree misdemeanor charge of tampering with records for manipulating the billing system that the Clerk of Courts Office uses to track payments of fines and court costs.

Auditors said Sharpe voided four transactions in the billing system, erasing evidence of payments totaling $612 that never made it to the bank.

The conviction should have disqualified her from unemployment benefits according to the auditor.

She paid restitution of $612 to the city as part of her sentence.

The Struthers Municipal Court also gave her a suspended 180-day jail sentence and ordered her to serve one year of probation and pay a $500 fine.

Records show that Sharpe also pleaded guilty to theft this past December. The charge stemmed from allegations that she took $1,500 from the cash drawers while working at the Giant Eagle on Boardman Canfield Road.

Sharpe made restitution and was placed into a diversion program by a judge.
