State transportation director warns of road funding crisis

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The director of the Ohio Department of Transportation says the state's road maintenance and infrastructure are facing an "impending crisis" unless more funding is provided for those types of projects.

ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks recently issued a warning before a panel that will make funding recommendations to Republican Gov. Mike DeWine. Marchbanks says there is currently a $1 billion gap in the department's budget.

The director says years of flat revenue from the gas tax, debt payments and increased highway construction costs have all contributed to the financial situation.

The governor and other lawmakers are currently considering an increase in the gas tax.

Marchbanks says he is not making any recommendations. But he says a 1 cent increase in the tax increase in the tax would bring in $67 million.
