Phone scammers claiming to be part of sheriff's office in Mercer County

Posted: Updated:
Mercer County, Pa. -

The Mercer County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of potential scam calls in the area.

According to the press release, the callers have been identifying themselves as employees of the Sheriff's office and are attempting to scam citizens out of money.

The release says the calls were made over the weekend.

The Sheriff's Department says the callers told residents that they had failed to appear for jury duty.

Callers told the residents that they owed fines to the county for failing to appear.

According to the release, the scammers duplicated the Sheriff's office number, making the calls appear legitimate.

Sheriffs say the scammers told residents that since the office was closed, they needed to meet a deputy in a parking lot to give them their money or a money card.

The release says Mercer County is not aware of anyone losing money in the scam.

District Attorney Pete Acker and Sheriff Roni Shilling say the county would not reach out by phone to tell them that they owed a fine and they do not deal with jury issues.

If anyone believes that they have been a victim of this scam, they should contact the Mercer County District Attorney's office at 724-662-3800, extension 2287.
