West Branch students build model roller coasters as part class competition

Posted: Updated:
BELOIT, Ohio -

Students at West Branch Middle School had a hands-on learning experience by building their own small-scale model roller coasters.

Students in STEM classes built the roller coasters using pipe insulation and marbles.

The pipe insulation and marbles were used to examine conversions between potential and kinetic energy.

The students also studied frictional effects used to design roller coasters that are driven by gravity.

"In order to build working roller coasters, students must realize the constraints placed on their designs and the designs of real roller coasters by the fundamental laws of physics," said Denise Ginocchi, STEM teacher at West Branch Middle School. "My students learned that their ability to understand and work within these constraints was paramount to the success of their roller coaster."

The project was a class competition, and the roller coaster models were displayed throughout the hallways at West Branch Middle School.
