The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella that is potentially linked to whole, fresh papayas from Mexico.

According to the release, eight states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Florida, and Texas have reported illnesses.

The FDA says that they are increasing screening for whole, fresh papayas.

The FDA and CDC are advising that consumers in states that have reported illnesses should throw away any whole, fresh papayas from Mexico.

Retailers and restaurants are being advised not to sell or serve the papayas.
